Q: What is the difference between first and second generation antioxidants?

Q: What is the difference between first and second generation antioxidants?A: Although they are found in many forms, not all antioxidants are the same.

The two types of antioxidants have been termed “primary antioxidants” and “secondary antioxidants”, depending on their ability to protect the skin. Studies suggest that although the second generation antioxidants found in many skin care products, such as vitamins C and E, can trap unstable oxygen molecules called “free radicals” (which are the primary cause of wrinkles) the more powerful first generation antioxidants can prevent the formation of new “free radical” species.
